WERK.KAUF.STADT
The concept of a Werk.Kauf.Stadt – an innovative combination of workshop and second-hand department store – is to move into the property at Lindenstrasse 6 in the 7th district. Here, products can not only be purchased, but also modified on site in the workshop according to individual ideas. The building will also be treated according to the “second chance” principle: Instead of demolition, the focus is on change, adaptation and revitalization – a sustainable cycle that can be continued on an ongoing basis. The spatial program includes the Kauf.Raum, where furnishings and textiles are offered, and the Werk.Raum, which specializes in carpentry, painting and tailoring. This concept is translated by an architectural functional layer that extends from the first floor of the front building to the former garage. A continuous wooden shelving structure connects all areas and creates both order and design unity. The two-storey front part of the building houses a drop-off and lending station on the first floor as well as the start of the furniture store and a temporary storage area for the workshop. The upper floor houses a café, which also functions as a showroom and inspires with its constantly changing character. The central building area is intended for the administration and sanitary facilities. In the hall itself, the functions of the department store and the workshop are zoned by the timber structure. The resulting rooms can be acoustically partitioned if required. Above the workrooms are galleries that are designed as flexibly usable studio spaces and allow for free furnishing. The circular arrangement of functions guides visitors intuitively through the Werk.Kauf.Stadt until they reach the exit with the cash registers – the final step of the experience. The aim of the concept is to give everyone access to small-scale craftsmanship and to create individual, new objects through creative recycling.
