FLOATING ARCHITECTURE – THE SECOND LIFE

Building on the previous experience with the topic of Collaborative Teamwork (“BraGraLuWi-Project”), a new project topic will be offered this semester, whereby the experience already gained has led to adjustments in the work structure and process. Basically, two (dislocated) architectural training centers participate in this design program. The existence of modern methods of communication contains an opportunity in this context, although the work on the design should not be displaced by the use of telecommunications. An interest in cooperative design and communication via the Internet is nevertheless of great importance. Therefore, basic knowledge in this area is assumed.

The task is to develop a design concept via the recycling of motor cargo ships. The use can be of public nature, but should be connected with an innovative function. In addition, the phenomenon of water in the city is present at both locations – albeit with different valences. Thus, a common background of thinking could result from this and connecting or converging aspects could be filtered out.

Procedure

Before Easter, the thematic framework is to be worked out. This concerns in particular the information acquisition and a basic project presentation. Likewise, preliminary work or joint CAD modeling and model construction are to be carried out. Nevertheless, this concept phase is concluded with an individual brainstorming. In the context of an intensive seminar the concept presentation takes place and working groups are formed. The final Internet design work is scheduled for 6/24/97. Finally, not only the final results, but also the intermediate steps are to be presented continuously on a www server.

Scope of Work

  • As-is analysis and development of a utilization concept
  • Design studies (extension and conversion) including the processing of technical aspects are to be on a scale of 1:100 to 1:1. In particular, interior design details and samples are to be presented on a scale of 1:20;
  • Full-scale representation of the design idea including a global treatment of the site conditions;
  • Construction of an architectural or VRML model;
  • Creation of a meaningful project description (text and images) and its preparation in HTML format.
