TASK

Not far from Linz’s main square is the property that is the focus of this design program. Despite its advantageous – because central – location, the given courtyard situation does not appear spectacular at first. However, upon closer inspection, a number of structural options gradually unfold. The existing structure is not to be completely demolished, but radical changes are possible, especially in the southern section. In addition, the permissible building height has not yet been completely exhausted and justified exceeding of the same can certainly be envisaged. In terms of use, loft-like studio/office uses with overnight accommodations should be considered first; however, other types of use would also be conceivable. Within the framework of this program, an architectural concept must first be developed. The further goal is not to implement detached sculptures and the like, but rather to develop concrete, usable solutions that are capable of raising the topic of attic conversions to a new level. RESUMEE

The setting: an intimate courtyard surrounded by a seemingly grown, completely unspectacular development. Somewhere in the city center and yet in the perceived “offside”. How does one react to such a location, what meaning does one assign to this seemingly undescribed “courtyard”? These are questions that the present designs attempt to approach in the most diverse ways. The undefined nature of the site, as much as is evidently clear, gives rise to a wide variety of possible answers and visions. Some concept seems to turn completely towards the sky, trying to escape the courtyard space and conquer a new world beyond the ground. A world of light and, if possible, of view. Lightness consequently becomes the central theme, whereby the conceived superstructures seem to distance themselves all the more clearly from their load-bearing existence.

A world of glass, unbounded and open, presents itself to the viewer. Other concepts, on the other hand, seek to fill the hitherto marginalized courtyard space with urban life. To let it become part of the urban life and to bring the inhabitants closer to what is called a center, a central location. The only logical step is that of opening up and revitalizing the area. New functions, both public and semi-public, are brought into the previously private sphere and are intended to contribute to a corresponding transformation. Then again, it is a new world of its own that is to be created within the existing structure. No matter whether it is permeated by gardens and greenery or dominated by private retreats with quite specific layouts. A world in which private space is to be measured anew every day and experienced in a highly individual way. Whoever lives here, or could live here, would have to “live” his own world, his own world of living and leisure. It would suddenly be possible to grow one’s own vegetables on the roof, or to escape the daily hustle and bustle in semi-public wellness areas. Whatever priority is set with regard to approaching the given place, it becomes more than clear that the given place has corresponding potential and is capable of acquiring a multitude of faces.
