EAEA ’95 Vienna aimed at a critical investigation of today’s endoscopic culture with regard to future developments. The Aspern-Workshop represented the highlight of this conference. Prior to the conference nine universities had submitted endoscopic and computer-assisted space simulations for this urban expansion area north of the Vienna Danube. The outcome was not to be regarded as a „noble competition“ between the various institutions participating, but rather to sound out the actual potential of various simulation techniques and their combinations for future use. The conference proceedings contain the papers presented at the meeting by 23 experts from 15 universities. The papers cover such areas as the technical features of endoscopy and environmental simulation, theories supporting the use of endoscopy, practical applications, and discussions on the future of endoscopy and environmental simulation in comparison with other means of architectural representation.

In the early eighties the European Full-scale Modeling Association (abrev. EFA, full-scale standing for 1:1 or simulation in full-scale) was founded acting as the patron of a conference every two years. In line with the conference title „Full-scale Modeling in the Age of Virtual Reality“ the participants were particularly concerned with the relationship of physical 1:1 simulations and VR. The assumption that those creating architecture provide of a higher degree of affinity to physical than to virtual models and prototypes was subject of vivid discussions.

„Challenges of the Future“ steht für die Weiterentwicklung des computergestützten Entwerfens und Planens im Dialog von Forschung und Lehre mit den Entwurfs- und Planungsprofessionen. Neue, in Entwicklung befindliche Technologien wurden hinsichtlich ihrer Auswirkungen diskutiert. Mehr als 65 Beiträge widmen sich den Kernbereichen Spatial Modeling, Digital Design Process und Collaborative Teamwork. Räumliches Denken erfordert entsprechende räumliche Modelle. Simulation und Modellbildung sind damit als unverzichtbare Bestandteile des Gestaltungsprozesses anzusehen. Die digitale Durchdringung des gesamten Planungsprozesses ist eine greifbare Option geworden. Es liegt nun an den Planern, diese Digitalisierung im Interesse bestmöglicher Qualität zu gestalten. Der dritte Schwerpunkt ist der zunehmenden Globalisierung gewidmet, die eine Zusammenarbeit auf Expertenebene unverzichtbar macht.

„Challenges of the Future“ features the further advancement regarding computer-assisted design and planning processes with close consideration of research teaching throughout the design and planning professions. Recent novel technologies in the development are discussed redarding their impact. More than 65 contributions offer insight into the focal issues of Spatial Modeling, Digital Design Process and Collaborative Teamwork.

Die vorliegende Arbeit bietet zur systematischen Erfassung von Bestand (Ist) und Planung (Soll) einen „Korb“ von Merkmalen / Bewertungskriterien und möglichen Indikatoren an, auf die problem- und projektorientiert nach Bedarf zugegriffen werden kann. Die Beschreibung erfolgt in Systemelementen und -relationen. Die Entwicklung einer Systematik und Methodik der Raumverträglichkeitsprüfung rundet das Angebot der vorliegenden Arbeit ab.

Spatial Impact as Contribution Regarding Sustainable Utilization of Space: The creative dialogue of „planning“ and critical „reviewing“ of planning work and projects with a relation to space fundamentally aims at a „sustainable utilization of space“ in line with the key-pattern for „sustainability“. Reviewing of spatial impact first will call for the model-representation of space. In addition, all effects resulting from planning and projects for the area under investigation are to be demonstrated clearly and thoroughly. The description of space therefore is accomplished according to system elements and system relations. The spatial impact analysis is to be regarded generally as a contribution for objectifying, adding transparency and comprehension to planning processes.

Der Begriff der „Simulation“ steht jenem der „Realität“ per definitionem diametral gegenüber, dennoch sind realmaßstäbliche Simulationen in eindeutiger Weise einer realen Welt, mit realen Dingen zuzuordnen. Die möglicherweise andersartigen Wirk- und Betrachtungsweisen verleihen der vorliegenden Arbeit ihren Titel. In Gestalt zyklenhaft zusammengeschlossener Kapitel wird versucht, die Eigenständigkeit des Mediums hinsichtlich der architekturbezogenen Wahrnehmung zu erläutern. Dem jeweiligen Bezug zur gebauten oder bloß gezeichneten Wirklichkeit wird dabei besonderes Augenmerk geschenkt.

Das Institut für Räumliche Interaktion und Simulation hat das Beziehungsfeld „Mensch und Raum“ zu seinem zentralen Thema gewählt: Mensch und Raum stehen in intensiver Wechselbeziehung zueinander. Einerseits beeinflussen Merkmale des Raumes die menschliche Wahrnehmung, andererseits wirkt der Mensch auf den Raum, verändert und gestaltet ihn. Durch Visualisierung und Modellbildung kann die Qualität der Kommunikation verbessert werden. Die Simulation von Räumen und Prozessen unter besonderer Berücksichtigung von angewandten Methoden, Medien und Techniken ist in weiterer Folge Gegenstand der Institutstätigkeit. In einer Festsitzung des Institutes anlässlich seines 5-jährigen Bestehens wurde auf Burg Plankenstein die Herausgabe eine Publikation vereinbart, die nun als Band 7 der Institutsschriftenreihe unter dem Titel „Raum@ Positionen der Forschung zum Lebensraum“ vorliegt. Die Beiträge spiegeln das vielfältige Wissen der Institutsmitglieder und decken somit ein breites Themenspektrum des Dialoges Mensch und Raum ab. Verschiedene Elemente und Relationen des komplexen Systems Raum werden beleuchtet.

400 Planer und Sozialwissenschaftler tagten von 7. bis 10.Juli 2004 an der Technischen Universität Wien. Im Brennpunkt der IAPS 18 stand der bevorstehende „Umbau Ost“ im Zuge der EU-Erweiterung, der nicht nur als wirtschaftlich-organisatorische Leistung zu sehen ist, sondern Sozialverträglichkeit und Evaluation der Planungsfolgen erfordert.

IAPS, die International Association of People-Environment Studies, fördert seit 1969 den interdisziplinären Gedankenaustausch zwischen Planungs- und Sozialwissenschaften, also v.a. zwischen Raumplanung, Architektur, Psychologie und Soziologie. Themenblöcke der 18. IAPS-Tagung 2004 waren unter anderem Partizipation, Tourismus, Umweltschutz, Gesundheit, Sicherheit, spezielle Nutzergruppen, Gender, kreative Umwelten und Umweltsimulation.

Die CD-Rom enthält Beschreibungen aller 382 Beiträge (in Symposien, Paper Sessions, Workshops und Poster Sessions) der wichtigen Wiener Konferenzveranstaltung. Außerdem sind etwa 2.400 Kurzfassungen aller vergangenen IAPS-Konferenzen aus der Zeit 1969-2002 aufgenommen und mittels Volltextsuche erschließbar – eine einmalige Datenbank für interdisziplinär Interessierte.

CAAD Futures is a biennial Conference that aims to promote the advancement of Computer Aided Architectural Design in the service of those concerned with the quality of the built environment. Cooperative planning in the New Europe „Cooperative planning“ in the context of a „New Europe“ will increasingly require local and global thought and action. A connection has to be made between „virtual, global spatial processes“ and „real, local spatial structures“. The discipline of strategic planning, rather „abstract“ in spatial terms and directed towards thought and decision-making processes, towards spatial processes of development and renewal, has to be closely linked to the increasingly „concrete“ field of physical planning, which relates to spatial structures. The common living space provides the frame of reference for the application of space-related concepts and planning processes which are translated into reality through the actions of people. It is this indivisible living space that we have to shape together.

Kooperativ Planen im Neuen Europa „Kooperativ Planen“ im Kontext eines „Neuen Europa“ erfordert verstärkt lokales und globales Denken und Handeln. „Virtuelle, globale räumliche Prozesse“ sind mit „realen, örtlichen und räumlichen Strukturen“ in Beziehung zu setzen. Eine räumlich eher „abstrakte“, strategische Planung, die auf Denk- und Entscheidungs-Prozesse, auf räumliche Entwicklungs- und Erneuerungsprozesse gerichtet ist, bedarf der engen Verbindung mit einer zunehmend „konkreten“ physischen Planung, die sich auf räumliche Strukturen bezieht. Der gemeinsame Lebensraum bildet den Bezugsrahmen für die Anwendung von raumbezogenen Konzepten und Planungen, welche durch die Handlungen der Menschen Wirklichkeit werden. Diesen unteilbaren Lebensraum gilt es gemeinsam zu gestalten.

Dieser Band folgt der IRIS-ISIS-Publikation zum Thema Raum@ (2003) und bezieht sich, allgemein betrachtet, auf die primär übergeordneten Maßstabsdimensionen im Bereich der Planung. Das Beziehungsfeld Mensch und Raum fungiert jedoch, wie schon im vorangegangenen Band, als „roter Faden“. Der Raumplanung drängen sich Fragen nach der Möglichkeit einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung, der Identität von Landschaft und Stadt oder nach regionalen Siedlungsmodellen auf. Diese Fragen wurden von den Autoren im Band 12 beantwortet, die Zusammenhänge auf die Region angewendet und untersucht. Neben Städten, Metropolen und Megacities werden hier auch periphere Räume, die in der Stadtplanung, im Städtebau, der Stadtsoziologie und verwandten Disziplinen nur selten untersucht werden, betrachtet.

Das deutsch-österreichisch-schweizerische Doktorandenkolleg „Forschungslabor Raum“ widmet sich der wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung mit schwierigen raumrelevanten Fragestellungen. Das Kolleg war vom 14. bis 19. Juni 2009 in Wien zu Gast. Ein „Best-Practice-Beispiel“ für den Umgang mit komplexen Problemstellungen ist der Planungsprozess „Wiener Donauinsel“, die in den Jahren 1972 bis 1988 dank einer einzigartigen Planungsorganisation entstand. Das daraus abgeleitete „Wiener Modell“ war Thema einer Podiumsdiskussion, zu der sich einige der damaligen Entscheidungsträger und Akteure aus Politik und Planung versammelten, um raumplanerische Erkenntnisse zu erläutern. Ein weiterer Wien-spezifischer Schwerpunkt war das „Wiener Philosophicum“. In einem offenen Dialog wurden an Karl Popper, Ludwig Wittgenstein und den „Wiener Kreis“ anknüpfend grundsätzliche Fragen des wissenschaftlichen Arbeitens und Erkennens im Kontext der Planungswissenschaften beleuchtet.

Vol. 16: Rainer MAYERHOFER, Sepp SNIZEK: REGIO@ – Umfahrungsstraßen und ihre Bedeutung für die Stadtentwicklung. Wien, 2017, 14,60 Euro

In der Frühzeit des Massenautoverkehrs wurden Entscheidungen für Planung und Bau von Umfahrungsstraßen primär aus verkehrstechnischer, anfangs auch noch aus strategischer Sicht, grundsätzlich aber zum Benefit der Autofahrer getroffen – mit zum Teil damals schon erkennbaren negativen städtebaulichen Folgen. Anfang der 1960-er Jahre wurden in der zugrundeliegenden Dissertation erstmals die Auswirkungen solcher Umfahrungsstraßen auf die Stadtentwicklung disziplinenübergreifend untersucht. Der vorliegende Beitrag beleuchtet und beurteilt nun aus heutiger Sicht die weitere Entwicklung und die seither eingetretenen Veränderungen insbesondere von Rahmenbedingungen und Zielsetzungen.
